Since Andy Warhol gave JAMES MATHERS his first one man show at New York’s famed Paige Powell Gallery, where Jean-Michel Basquiat also made his start, the World of Art has undeniably recognized the fierce talent and genius of this LA based Soul Attacking, Mind-Bending Master Painter. Mather’s collectors include the famous
Corsini Family of Florence, Actors Nicholas Cage, Eric Idle (Monty Python) and Beverly D’Angelo, Crowded House singer Tim Finn, and Dublin’s famed Guinness Draught Co. Owner Marina Guinness. The Art of Mr. Mathers will arrest your vision, flex your convictions, slap and somehow soothe your soul. Legendary platinum music producer GEZA X helped invent Punk Rock producing seminal acts Black Flag, The Germs, Dead Kennedy’s, etc. and performing/recording his own art damaged music since punk’s beginning in the late 70’s. His productions of "Holiday in Cambodia" for the Dead Kennedys and "Lexicon Devil" for The Germs separated California's punk sound from others at the time with its eccentricity, humor and spunk, making Los Angeles very different than the scene in New York or London. In the 90’s Geza produced Meredith Brooks’s song "Bitch" which went platinum ranking #2 on the charts and the musical bible Billboard Magazine voted Geza "Best Producer of the Year" in 1997. Since the 80’s Geza began taking pictures of the early punk scene. Geza now takes those pictures, such as a 1979 photo he shot of Red Hot Chili Pepper singer Anthony Keidis, dramatically alters it via computer, prints the altered photo on canvas, adds paint to the canvas and frames the completed works with copper tubing. He describes his artworks as "Biomorphic Shutterings." The neo-Warhol, pop-iconic, and vibrantly colorful style work comes across as contemporary to the core with harrowing whispers of yesterday. Geza has shown in several group shows including Track 16 and Black Cat Galleries. Geza’s art collectors include Tool manager Victoria Blake, Philanthropist Cameron Melville, and famed artist manager and collector Peter Hursch.

New Painting: Funhole Levitation Act

This painting is called, Funhole Levitation Act, and inspired by one of my favorite horror novels by Kathe Koja, The Cipher. It's done in a new style for me, which I'm thinking of grafting onto my comic book (AKA Graphic Novel) style of painting. The medium is acrylic and watercolor on wood, and paper, with a little bit of Photoshop. I'm particularly happy with the way the background turned out. I glued down torn bits of cardboard, and sand paper, then painted over them, to get the effect.

Last Saturday was the Joshua Petker "Black Sugar" art opening at the Corey Helford Gallery in Culver City. Beautiful new paintings (by Petker) adorned the walls, spilling vivid colors into the senses of all who came, and not even the temporary smell of natural gas in the air could keep art lovers from entering the building. CHG provided a wonderfully comfortable and friendly environment, for patrons to enjoy these new works, and for the works to enjoy the patrons. Indeed, either Petkers models had all shown up for the event, or the paintings themselves came to life to mingle, as I could almost swear that some of the women walking the floors of the event, were the same that hung in frames on the walls. Non were caught on film, as is always the case in unexplained events.

I've been messing around with photoshop lately in preparation for a collaboration with Fotojedi, that we'll be working on at the end of this year. Below are the results, which I'm quite happy with for someone who's never really played with the program to this extent before. The first one is called Fallen Angel, and the others underneath are a little bit of fan art for one of my favorite horror novels, The Cipher, by Kathe Koja. I'm still deciding which of the three is the direction I'm going to take my work in.

Here's a photo of just a few of the limited edition, art reproductions, I'm releasing this year. Each print has been burned at the edges, and mounted on wood, just like I do with many of my original works of art. In addition, I have painted little touch ups on each one, added gold and silver leaf to many, and signed and numbered all. They are limited to 150 each (excluding Demise of Venus which is limited to 25) and are currently $40 each. Prices will increase as supplies sell down.

It helps me to continuously grow as an artist. Being an art teacher makes it easy for me. Some have said I should stick to one style, but Picasso made this technique work for him just fine. New Paintings By Christopher Moonlight: Strange Icons

Strange Icons, are what I call my new series of paintings done with acrylic and other mixed media, with gold leaf, on wood panels. Each peace thus far is 10"x13", and 3/4" thick. I chose this thickness because it allows me to chisel into the wood and add found objects if I so desire.

This piece is a tribute to a painting by William Adolphe Bouguereau, called Cupidon. c.1875

If mermaids kept pets, what would they be?

This fortune teller's crystal ball is carved into the painting it's self. I then pored in fiberglass resin which is encasing a dried baby bird, I found baked by the sun, on the road, on a walk.

The wizard's glass she holds is carved out of the wood, with a mouse skull with in, which has been set in resin.

Here is my latest painting entitled Prophecy. It's 10 x 13 mixed media on wood. The crystal ball has been carved out of the wood, where a mouse scull has been placed, and set in fiberglass resin, to give the appearance of a vision.

Here are some more wood panel shots, because the ones from the last post I did on them weren't all that great. I may be able to paint but I'm not all that great with a camera. Still, I think these will give you a much better idea of how they really look.
